HOW CRUEL IS MY MAKEUP BAG?

I was inspired by Hannah Witton to do this post as I recently watched her video going through her makeup bag to see how 'cruel' it was, in terms of how much was tested on animals and I have to say I was quite surprised by some of the results she had, so I wanted to see for myself! I'm going to go off the same website Hannah used which is Logical Harmony where there are various lists indicating whether a brand is cruelty free. There are brands to be avoided, brands that are currently pending (they need more info or the brand haven't got back to them) or brands that are in a grey area. Brands to be avoided takes into account not just final products that have been tested on animals, but also ingredients used in the products that have been tested on animals.

So, without further ado, here's how ethical my makeup bag is...

Bourjois: PENDING. The website has reached out to the brand but not had a response.

Bare Minerals: CRUELTY-FREE. I was aware of this having worked for the brand a few years ago so I'm glad to see they still are - Logical Harmony notes that their parent company Shiseido IS NOT cruelty free and some of their brushes aren't either.

Rimmel: BRANDS TO AVOID.

Physicians Formula: CRUELTY-FREE

NARS: CRUELTY-FREE. Again, notes that their parent company Shiseido isn't cruelty free.

Freedom: Didn't have Freedom specifically but had Makeup Revolution (who are the founders of Freedom) as Pending.

Benefit: BRANDS TO AVOID.

Maybelline: BRANDS TO AVOID.

Clinique: BRANDS TO AVOID.

NYX: CRUELTY-FREE. Again, notes that their parent company L'Oreal isn't cruelty free.

Urban Decay: CRUELTY-FREE. Again, notes that their parent company L'Oreal isn't cruelty free.

Soap and Glory: GREY AREA. Weren't able to provide clear statements on animal testing when asked.

Wet 'n' Wild: CRUELTY-FREE.

Elizabeth Arden: BRANDS TO AVOID.

So, out of the 14 brands that I have in my everyday, simple makeup bag 5 of them were definitive brands to avoid, 2 were completely cruelty-free, 4 were cruelty free but had parent companies that were not, 2 were pending and 1 was a grey area.

I'm actually pleasantly surprised by this, it wasn't AS bad as I thought it would be, but I have to say when looking through the lists there are definitely some surprises when it comes to who you think would be cruelty free. It's definitely an aim of mine this year to try and be more conscious of the products I'm using and hopefully start buying things more thoughtfully. If you have any cruelty-free brands or products that you love be sure to let me know!
